Two separate COVID-related financial schemes have been announced by the Goa cabinet on Wednesday. One of these schemes aims at providing relief packages to the kin of those who passed during the pandemic. The other scheme has been initiated to provide relief packages to the unorganised sector and those who are involved in traditional occupations. With monetary assistance, the government aims to allay the economic strain that these people have faced.

One of the two schemes started by the state government involves providing ex gratia financial assistance of ₹2 lakh to those who have lost a family member to COVID-19. However, there is a clause to this scheme which states that the income of the family who lost their loved one to COVID should be below ₹8 lakh.

The Chief Minister has also stated that a one-time COVID relief financial scheme for the marginalised and unorganised sector has been approved. This shall benefit individuals who are involved in traditional occupations like coconut plucking and pottery among others.

Who will benefit from these schemes?

As per the latest data recorded, 3,079 persons have died due to COVID-related complications in Goa. The relief package will greatly help their family in recovering from the financial strain that they experienced while their deceased family member was getting treatment.

In regards to the second scheme, reports quote Goa's apex authority stating- "According to the new scheme, a one-time financial assistance of ₹5,000 will be given to rickshaw operators, motorcycle pilots, single-taxi drivers. Around 25,000 to 30,000 persons are eligible for it. Those involved in traditional occupations can also benefit from this scheme."
