TRAI to launch nationwide CNAP service, featuring caller identification

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is currently devising plans to implement a nationwide caller identification service. This service, known as Calling Name Presentation (CNAP), displays the name of the caller on the receiver's screen uniformly across all networks and devices.

TRAI has recently submitted a proposal for the introduction of CNAP to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in India.

What are the recommendations outlined by TRAI?

Under the proposal following recommendations have been made by TRAI:

  • Introduce a feature called Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) in Indian phone networks.

  • All phone service providers should offer CNAP to their customers who ask for it.

  • A plan for how CNAP will work in the Indian phone network has been outlined.

  • Once the recommendations are accepted, the government should tell phone makers to include CNAP in all phones sold in India after a certain date.

Currently, both TRAI and the Department of Telecommunications are collaborating to iron out the technical details required for the implementation of this service. Once operational, it is anticipated to assist users in identifying unknown numbers, thereby contributing to the elimination of fake and scam calls.
