Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) and Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) have secured the 234th and 245th rank, respectively, in the third edition of QS Sustainability Rankings 2025.

Led by IIT Delhi (ranked 171th), IIT-K and IIT-B are among the top five institutes in India to be recognised in the QS Sustainability Rankings. These rankings assess institutions globally, based on their commitment to environmental impact, social responsibility, and governance.

IIT-Delhi and IIT-Kanpur have been ranked among the World's Top 100, under the Environmental Impact category, which accounts for 45% of the total score. IIT-D holds the 55th position, while IIT-K ranks 87th.

Ben Sowter, Vice President of QS, praised the progress, noting that 34 of the 78 Indian universities featured have improved their rankings compared to the previous year. Indian institutions, including IIT Kanpur and IIT Bombay, continue to strengthen their impact through initiatives like renewable energy adoption, sustainable research, and community-focused education on climate action.

The QS Sustainability Rankings 2025 include more than 1,740 universities from 107 countries and territories, marking a notable rise from last year’s 1,397 institutions across 95 locations. The University of Toronto tops the global list, followed by ETH Zurich in second place, while Lund University (Sweden) and the University of California, Berkeley, share the third rank.

This year, Bengaluru's Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has been ranked among the "world's top 50 for environment education". A total of 78 Indian universities have been featured in the QS Sustainability Rankings 2025.
