Touted to be one of the oldest and most prominent water bodies in the city, Kanpur's famous Kachhua Talab is all set to get a facelift soon! With a budget of ₹70 lakhs, Kanpur Municipal Corporation has been sanctioned to carry out this ambitious work. While the municipal body has already initiated the work, it is likely to get completed within the next three months.

Facilitating the breeding of turtles

Located on the banks of the Ganges at Panki, the Kachhua Talab in Kanpur is home to turtles that are believed to be over 100 years old. Due to water body erosion, pollution and other issues, the pond has seen a fall in the number of turtles. This initiative aims to improve and revitalise this pond and facilitate the breeding of turtles here.

The area of work includes increasing the depth of the pond by 2 metres, arranging better lighting, setting up public toilets and repairing the tiles as well.

Notably, the administration had earlier approved a ₹2-crore municipal project to revitalise this historic water body back in 2017. Out of the total budget set aside for this initiative, the officials utilised ₹1.7 crores to carry out some revamp till 2020. However, it could not be rejuvenated completely then, which has led to this new rejuvenation plan now.
