To enhance railway infrastructure in Kanpur, the district railway administration has initiated steps for the construction of the Anwarganj-Mandhana Elevated Railway Track. As part of this project, Rawatpur and Kalyanpur stations will be discontinued, and a new station will be constructed near Kanpur's Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJM). The station will be named after Bharat Ratna and India's former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The decision was finalised during a key meeting held on Monday, between railway and district administration officials to expedite the project’s implementation.

To facilitate construction, rail traffic on this route will remain suspended for approximately two years, with essential trains diverted to alternative routes. Additionally, the Kanpur Electricity Supply Company (KESCO) will reroute the high-tension power lines that currently run parallel to the railway track. The elevated railway line is expected to resolve daily traffic congestion caused by ground-level tracks passing through the city.
