Keoladeo National Park is located in Bharatpur, which is almost a 3-hour drive from Jaipur. Known earlier as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, it was turned into a national park when noted Indian ornithologist and naturalist, Salim Ali, used his influence to garner government support. Breeding & feeding ground for birds
Recognised as one of the world’s most important bird breeding and feeding grounds, the origin of Keoladeo National Park traces back to the 1850s. During that era, it was marked as a royal hunting ground and game reserve for the Maharajas and the Britishers. In fact, the story of Lord Linlithgow, Viceroy of India between 1936-43, shooting thousands of ducks here in a single day, is widely known.
Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985, this national park is home to hundreds of bird species and animals, such as the basking python, painted storks, deer, nilgai and more. Further, it is also known as the breeding ground of rare and elusive migratory birds, such as the Siberian Crane!
