Anti-sleep devices to be installed in 5 buses in Uttar Pradesh on a trial basis

Khushbu Kirti

In order to avoid bus accidents caused due to fatigue among drivers, the Uttar Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) has announced the installation of anti-sleep devices in buses on a trial basis. Being installed on five buses in Uttar Pradesh, the anti-sleep device depends on a sensor and alarm that monitor movement of the driver.

Tragic news of buses falling off rail, ramming into dividers, sometimes even other vehicles, due to bus drivers falling asleep, is, unfortunately, common, and these devices aim to combat that. If proven successful, the device will be installed in some 9,000+ roadway buses.

UPSRTC's announcement

On November 9, "Sanjay Kumar, Managing Director, Uttar Pradesh Parivahan Nigam, instructed to install anti-sleep devices in five buses for the purpose. Thereafter, instructions were given..." UPSRTC took to Twitter to announce the same.

Anti-sleep alarms & how they work

The sensor-based devices will be placed ahead of the bus driver near the steering wheel, can recognise faces and monitor the driver's movement. Usually, the system is dependent on pupil detection technology, wherein fatigue can be predicted and, in turn, warned immediately.

Alerts will be sent to the control room in case there is no movement shown by the driver for 5-10 seconds. Besides this, the device will also make a loud beep if such a situation arises. In case there's no movement on the part of the driver for a longer time, the alarm makes rapid sounds.

In the given manner, technology utilised not only to ensures a better experience for passengers but also, more importantly, is capable of avoiding road accidents from taking place.
