Historical Rumi Darwaza in Lucknow to soon undergo renovation

Khushbu Kirti

Standing 60 feet tall since the late 1700s, the epochal Rumi Darwaza in Lucknow will soon undergo renovation post experiencing recent damages. Small cracks have reportedly developed in the heritage structure over the years which will now be repaired by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). For this, the surrounding bustling roads and traffic will have to be put on a halt.

The historic gate, which was built during the reign of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784-86, will be closed for renovation for a while. The rich architectural significance also is indicated by the fact that its design is identical to that of a portal in Turkey's Constantinople. It is known for its beautiful chhatri on top, while the gate was earlier used as an entrance into Old Lucknow. Today, it has metamorphosed into an important historical and cultural symbol of the city.

Rumi Darwaza in a vulnerable shape

Reportedly, the cracks at the Rumi Darwaza in Lucknow are some 8-10 years old and the renovation plan has been on the cards for a while.

"For us, to repair the structure, the district administration will have to divert traffic on that road for at least three months. If not repaired now, things can get worse for the iconic monument," Chief Archaeologist of ASI, Dr Aftab Hussain, opined.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur recently declared the monument as the 'most vulnerable standing monument of the city'.

"The district administration will act immediately once the ASI sends the proposal to start work on the Rumi Darwaza," a district administration official informed.

Bada Imambada to undergo renovation too

Renovation is also slated to take place at the iconic Bada Imambada soon after a portion of its parapet collapsed during the recent rains. With these developments, the pride of Lucknow that is these heritage monuments will get the care that is much needed.
