In a first, doctors at Lucknow’s King George’s Medical University (KGMU) have carried out a combined liver-kidney transplant. This step was taken after the family of a brain-dead patient donated the kidneys, liver, and corneas. The 20-year-old Hardoi patient had met with an accident in October and had been on ventilator.
In a manner, the city saw new life engendering from death as the aforementioned kidney and liver were transplanted to an Azamgarh patient (58). The patient is expected to get stable soon and is being monitored regularly.
Brain-dead man saves multiple lives
The remaining kidney which was donated, by the brain-dead patient, has been sent to Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Science (SGPGIMS) to save another life of a patient who needs it, while the corneas have been preserved at KGMU’s eye bank. The 20-yr-old was declared brain dead during the treatment post the accident.
The team of doctors who performed the first-of-its-kind surgery was lead by the head of the gastro surgery department, Dr Abhijit Chandra.

Recently, KGMU also began preparations to conduct possible heart transplants in the future. If this is implemented, it will be the first such transplant in Uttar Pradesh. The post-operative system for the surgery, as well as the infrastructure work, has been underway. They have also reportedly received a license from DMET for the conduction of heart transplant surgeries.
