KGMU in Lucknow to continue Trauma Centre operations to deal with emergencies amid COVID surge

Muskaan Tekwani

Lucknow's King George's Medical University, one of the premiere COVID hospitals in Uttar Pradesh, has decided that its Trauma Centre will continue to work as before while the rest of the facility will be converted into a dedicated COVID hospital. This decision has been taken for the benefit of emergency cases and lack of trauma expertise in the city. Other pioneering institutes, namely PGI and RML, have informed that they do not offer treatment to trauma cases. Reportedly, it has been decided that post patient's stabilisation, they shall be shifted to either of the two institutes for further treatment.

In an attempt to expand the scope of COVID treatment in Lucknow, the state had ordered to entirely turn KGMU into a dedicated coronavirus facility from April 19. Besides that, it was permitted to council only cardiology and gynaecology emergencies. However now, given its expertise in handling trauma patients, this wing will continue to operate as a trauma facility, read reports.

Further, as per record, since all wards of the hospital will be converted into coronavirus treatment or isolation wards, the trauma patients will be escorted safely by the Health Department to Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences or Ram Manohar Lohia Institute for further treatment and care. Meanwhile, the rest of the hospital will provide COVID testing and treatment.

KGMU Vice-Chancellor Lt. Gen (retd) Dr Bipin Puri said, "Since we do not know which patient will be Covid positive, we will convert the ground floor as a holding area where RT-PCR test will be conducted on patients. Till their report comes, they will receive emergency treatment in the holding area. If positive, they will be shifted to Covid hospital, otherwise, they will be shifted to the department concerned in the trauma building."

COVID update:

In the last 24 hours, about 5,800 fresh cases and 22 were reported in Lucknow, raising alarms across the administrative spectrum. However, it has also been noted that recovery has peaked sharply in the last 25 days, a testament to the efforts of the healthcare and medical system alike. Over 5,249 recoveries were made in Lucknow itself in this period of time. At the state level, about 28,200 new detections and 11,000 recoveries were reported on Monday.
