Lucknow's crown jewel, its 18th-century Rumi Darwaza, has reopened to the public after almost two years of renovations. The iconic structure, which had developed multiple cracks over time, was in desperate need of restoration. The Archaeological Survey of India commenced the complex task of restoring the Rumi Darwaza to its former glory in August 2022.

Now, with 99% of the repair work complete, the iconic structure has been opened to the public in time for the upcoming occasion of Muharram.

Reportedly, vehicle access through the Rumi Darwaza will remain banned, as vibrations from moving vehicles caused cracks in the monument. According to Aftab Hussain, Superintending Officer, ASI (Lucknow Circle), "Although the Rumi Darwaza has opened for public, the traffic movement via the Gate will remain banned like it was during the repair. Traffic will be diverted through adjacent roads to prevent further damage to the monument."
