With an overall objective of boosting air quality of the city and spreading urban greenery, Lucknow is all set to see yet another Miyawaki forest. This will be the fourth of its kind, after successful plantations near Aliganj area by NBRI, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) and one in Gudamba by LMC.

This afforestation project will be undertaken by Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR) and is slated to come up on IITR's Kanpur Road campus. It will be 100 sq mtr in area and will incorporate some 1,000 plantations.

Miyawaki method, that involves filling each square meter space with saplings of a large tree, medium-sized tree, shrub and a medicinal plant (arranged in order to optimise outcomes), has been recognised as one of the most effective tree-planting techniques. Ideal for engendering diverse forest ecosystems, these forests have been found to record a high biodiversity and, in turn, combat climate change and global warming emergencies.
