To improve connectivity within Lucknow and its surrounding areas, the Northern Railways (NR) Lucknow Division is set to develop an 'Orbital Railway Corridor.' Inspired by the success of the Outer Ring Road, which connects city highways, this corridor aims to enhance transportation around the city.

Spanning 170 kilometres, the project will integrate city stations and neighbouring districts while extending connectivity to other railway stations across Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, trains from Charbagh will be redirected to other stations in Lucknow, reducing congestion at existing railway terminals. As of now, the Northern Railways, Lucknow Division has been tasked with preparing the DPR for the initiative.

The Orbital Railway Corridor is set to transform connectivity by integrating multiple key sections, including Lucknow-Kanpur, Lucknow-Shahjahanpur-Moradabad, Aishbagh-Daliganj-Sitapur City, Lucknow-Barabanki-Gonda, Lucknow-Barabanki-Ayodhya, Lucknow-Sultanpur-Varanasi, and Lucknow-Raebareli-Varanasi.

A major highlight of the corridor will be a greenfield mega passenger terminal, equipped with over 30 railway tracks and more than 20 platforms to accommodate high passenger volumes efficiently. Additionally, the corridor will feature rail-on-rail bridges, ensuring smoother and more efficient train movement.

The survey for the project has been approved and construction is expected to commence soon. With a target completion date set for 2031, the project is expected to improve railway infrastructure and connectivity in the region significantly.
