As the gang rape of a minor blood cancer survivor shocked Lucknow, irony hit another chord when UP Police marked the completion of ‘Women’s safety week’ on Sunday.

The incident took place on Saturday near Chhilawaan Masjid in Sarojininagar. According to Police, the survivor was invited for an outing by her acquaintances.

One of the accused Shubham took her on his bike to a secluded place and after covering some distance, another accused Sumit along with Shubham gang-raped her and fled from the scene.

According to National Crime Records Bureau data for 2016, Lucknow ranked second in crimes against women.

The Lucknow reports show a massive increase of 43% in crimes against women. 2,205 crimes were reported in the city in 2016 whereas Delhi reported 13, 803 crimes against women in the same year.

According to the latest data by NCRB, there was 37% increase in cases where a woman’s modesty was compromised in comparison to 2013. The domestic violence and cases of cruelty by husband was also on a surge of 11%.

“Because Lucknow is the capital, cases are registered due to pressure groups-—something reflected in crime records—but in other cities, it is worse,” social activist Madhu Garg told TOI.

“I had organised ‘Shakti Diwas’ in all police circles of the city for three months in 2016. In this, not only were pending cases resolved but unregistered cases were followed, which has resulted in the records.” Now Meerut SSP Manzil Saini who was Lucknow SSP in 2016 told TOI.
