On Monday, Lucknow University finalised its four-year undergraduate course structure in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP)- 2020. To be implemented September onwards, across the University and its 524 affiliated colleges in Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Hardoi, Sitapur and Lakhimpur Kheri, it will benefit over 2 lakh students from the upcoming academic session. This new structure is intended to make learning fun for students by arming them with skills across various disciplinary domains.

The new four-year course structure is a shift from the traditional training as it will take into account- interdisciplinary research and vocational training in music, arts and social work. Students will be evaluated on a total of 192 credits over 8 semesters, with 24 credits allotted to each semester.

Multiple entry and exit points will be offered so that students can take a break and join college after gap years, thereby, not letting any training go to waste. Depending upon the duration for which a student attends college, a certificate, degree or diploma will be awarded. Further, this new structure has a massive list of open online courses which can benefit enrolled students in myriad ways.

How will the new system benefit students?

As per guidelines, students will engage with core subjects, along with chosen electives, vocational subjects, internships and co-curricular activities, during the first four semesters. The last two semesters will be dedicated to whetting the knowledge of core subjects through study, research and application. Moreover, NCC and NSS will also be a part of the curriculum.

This educational training programme will increase the life skills and employability of graduates in a fast-paced job market where individuals need to be the jack of all trades to thrive. Further, this will bring a shift in the thinking of that part of society, that focuses on pursuing academic interests alone.
