Lucknow Weather: Season's heaviest rainfall recorded, Orange Alert for 48 hours, schools shut

The downpour has caused significant traffic disruptions.

Lucknow has been grappling with relentless rains since Saturday evening, and the entire state of Uttar Pradesh is now reeling under intense monsoon showers. The capital is bracing for even more torrential rain, thunderstorms, and lightning over the next two days, with the Indian Meteorological Department issuing an Orange Alert.

Lucknow saw its heaviest rainfall of the season on Sunday, with 40.4 mm recorded in just 24 hours until 8:30 AM on Sunday.

Waterlogging, traffic woes amid heavy rains

Lucknow received 75.1 mm of rain over 33 hours from Saturday morning to Sunday evening, causing widespread waterlogging in areas like Gomti Nagar, Hazratganj, and Charbagh. The downpour has caused significant traffic disruptions, with submerged roads and long jams, especially on Shaheed Path. The persistent rainfall has created flood-like conditions in several parts of the state, impacting over 400 villages. In light of this, the Lucknow District Magistrate has declared a holiday today for all schools from classes 1 to 12, prioritising student safety.

The Meteorological Department attributes the heavy rains to a shift in the monsoon trough and a cyclonic circulation near Bihar, both of which have intensified the downpours. While the intensity is expected to decrease by August 5, rainfall will continue until August 6. As the downpours persist, residents are urged to stay vigilant, with the weather expected to continue causing disruptions across the region.
