Lucknow's historic Butler Palace, which has been undergoing repairs, will now be transformed into a vibrant book cafe and cultural hub. Believed by some locals to have a mysterious past, this iconic landmark is set to be revitalised under a state government initiative.

The revamp work is being done under a PPP model, with LDA overseeing the project. The upcoming book cafe within the estate will feature exhibitions, workshops, an art gallery and various cultural activities.

Butler Palace to now bring an immersive historical experience

Repair work underway at the Butler Palace

Built in 1915 by Raja Mahmudabad in memory of Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler, the then Deputy Commissioner of Awadh, Butler Palace had gradually fallen into neglect. The state government began restoration efforts last year, appointing a team of experts to revitalise the palace with modern amenities while preserving the intricacies of its Victorian-style architecture.

Some of the upcoming upgrades and initiatives at Butler Palace include:

  • Collaboration with coaching institutes to organise literary and cultural activities.

  • Exhibitions featuring local artists, craft fairs, and discussion sessions on historical topics.

  • A dedicated art gallery showcasing artworks that highlight the city's history and cultural heritage.

  • A light and sound show bringing history to life through engaging storytelling.

  • Art exhibitions, film screenings, workshops, craft fairs, and displays of local products to promote regional talent and heritage.

The project is expected to be completed by March 31, 2025 (tentative) focusing on structural restoration, exterior preservation and the enhancement of essential amenities.
