Squad of Special Police Officers to temporarily join & assist Lucknow Police in varied tasks

A team of special police officers (SPOs) with an efficient track record are slated to be appointed, in Lucknow, to aid police in maintaining communal harmony, traffic order, improving police-public relations, and so on. For the same, selected members of the public are being anointed, as per Lucknow Police Commissionerate, for a temporary period of three years.

SPOs, who are supposed to aid in implementing relief operations during emergencies also, will soon be appointed by zonal police officers under Section 17 of the Police Act, 1861.

Duties of the SPOs

"With a view to enlisting public co-operation in the functioning of the police and for improving police-public relations, selected members of the public may be appointed as Special Police Officers from time to time," the standing order mentioned.

DCP (East) Prachi Singh has been made the nodal head to oversee the team of SPOs in Lucknow, who elaborated, "Briefing of SPOs will be done on how to gather information and intelligence, keep an eye on the special criminal incidents and also assist traffic movement."

Who can apply?

People who have a reputation of carrying out charitable deeds, saving lives, and helping those is distress, will be chosen to become SPOs. ID cards will be issued to the squad. Until now, the SPOs supposedly did not have important roles to play. However, now, responsibilities will be levied upon the officers.

Anyone who is willing to apply can fill a form and submit it at the nearby police stations. The candidates will be verified and interviewed for the same.
