UP's Mahakumbh Mela 2025: AI cameras & social media platforms to help manage crowds

Ahead of the Mahakumbh Mela 2025, Prayagraj is set to leverage AI technology for crowd management and safety for an estimated 45 crore devotees. Reportedly, 2,700 CCTV cameras, including AI-enabled ones, are being installed to provide 24/7 surveillance and real-time alerts. This initiative will complement human intelligence efforts, with 56 police stations established in the region.

Further, for the first time, the event will utilise social media platforms like Facebook and X to help locate lost individuals. A digital ‘Khoya Paaya Kendra’ (Lost-and-Found Centre) will register and track missing persons. Once registered, AI-powered cameras will search for them and updates will be shared on social media to expedite the process.

The government’s initiative to install 328 AI-enabled cameras is nearing completion, ensuring enhanced security and smoother navigation for attendees.
