The Maharashtra Transport Department will soon roll out surprise drug testing for drivers, using SoToxa drug screening system. As per reports, random drug tests will apply to all types of drivers, including those operating buses, trucks, and cars. MSRTC and BEST bus drivers will also be subjected to these screenings. The initiative targets drivers suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The Transport Minister announced the initiative in the state assembly on Tuesday, highlighting its role in improving road safety and reducing accidents.

SoToxa System for quick drug detection

SoToxa system is Oral Fluid Mobile Test System that will be used for rapid drug screening. This compact, handheld device provides accurate test results within minutes, making it ideal for roadside checks on buses, cars, trucks, and other vehicles. It’s particularly useful for monitoring workplace drug use and ensuring safety across various transport sectors.

Strengthening Public Transport Safety

The initiative forms part of the state's broader strategy to improve public transport safety. By implementing routine and surprise drug tests, the authorities hope to reduce the risk of accidents caused by intoxicated drivers, aligning with Maharashtra's anti-drug policy.
