Bandra to soon house a 165-bed cancer hospital, offering accessible & cost-effective care

Khushboo Ali

In response to the escalating demand for cancer treatment in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is taking proactive steps to establish a dedicated 165-bed cancer hospital in Bandra. With existing facilities at Tata Memorial Center in Parel and another hospital in Kharghar stretched to capacity, BMC's initiative at Bandra Reclamation seeks to provide essential relief to patients. The aim is to offer accessible and cost-effective care to those in dire need.

Features of the proposed hospital

The building, spanning nine floors along with two basements, will cover approximately 12,000 square meters. It will accommodate essential facilities including 12 outpatient department (OPD) wards, five laboratories catering to various disciplines such as biochemistry, histopathology, hematology, and microbiology. Additionally, the hospital will be equipped with mammography and PET-CT units for advanced diagnostics. Furthermore, the premises will feature amenities such as lecture halls, seminar rooms, a blood bank, and isolation chambers.

The hospital underscores the significance of offering assistance not just to patients but also to their families. As part of this commitment, the authorities have proposed dormitory-style accommodations within the premises. While the project timeline remains unspecified, BMC officials assure adherence to regulatory protocols, including approvals from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) before commencing construction.

Once operational, this BMC cancer facility will serve as a vital resource in the city's healthcare landscape, offering accessible and high-quality care to cancer patients and their families.
