Ganeshotsav 2025: Mumbai Police lists traffic restrictions, diversions

Halting, dancing and use of loudspeakers banned on old bridges.

Mumbai Police have issued a detailed traffic and security plan for Ganeshotsav 2025, with restrictions, diversions and parking bans across the city. The 10-day festival begins on August 27 and concludes with Anant Chaturdashi on September 6. Millions of devotees are expected at pandals, including the iconic Lalbaugcha Raja, and at immersion sites across Mumbai. Authorities said heavy vehicles will face time-bound bans, while ‘no-parking’ zones will be enforced on major roads in south and suburban Mumbai. Read on to plan your commute.

South Mumbai

  • Dr B.A. Road (Hindmata–Byculla) closed for BEST buses during Lalbaug and Parel processions

  • Diversions via Parel T.T., Acharya Donde Marg, Kalachowki

  • Immersion day (6 Sept): Heavy vehicles and private buses banned from 7 AM till midnight in Colaba, Marine Drive, Girgaon, Dadar and Byculla

Western Suburbs

  • Andheri, Santacruz, Goregaon, Kandivali: Closures on Juhu Tara Road, J.P. Road, Marve Road, Bandarpakhadi Road

  • Goods vehicles restricted in festival zones for all 10 days

  • No-parking zones in Oshiwara, Borivali, Malad, and around key immersion sites

Eastern Suburbs

  • Chembur: Hemu Kalani Marg and C.G. Gidwani Marg fully closed to traffic

  • RC Marg and adjoining areas are off-limits to heavy vehicles

  • Mankhurd: Daily curbs on Sion–Panvel Highway and Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road, from 8 AM - 11 AM and 5 PM – 9 PM

On Ganesh Visarjan, Mumbai Police will enforce ‘no-parking’ zones around beaches and lakes, including Girgaon Chowpatty, Juhu, Dadar, Marve, Versova and Powai. Watchtowers, public announcement systems and plainclothes officers will be deployed to monitor crowd movement.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also issued guidelines on old road overbridges, limiting pedestrian crossings to 100 people at a time and prohibiting halts, dancing and loudspeakers during processions.

Advisory to citizens

  1. Plan ahead: Avoid procession routes and use alternate roads suggested by Mumbai Traffic Police.

  2. Check updates: Follow @MTPHereToHelp on X and the Mumbai Traffic Police website for live diversions and advisories.

  3. Immersion days: Expect longer travel times on 27 August (Ganesh Chaturthi) and 6 September (Anant Chaturdashi); restrictions will last most of the day.

  4. Parking rules: No-parking zones in Colaba, Marine Drive, Dadar, Juhu, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali and near all immersion sites.

  5. Emergency exemptions: Ambulances, school buses, milk vans, bakery supplies, water tankers, fuel vehicles, government and semi-government vehicles will be allowed.

  6. Safety: Citizens are advised not to crowd on road overbridges; no halts, dancing or loudspeakers will be permitted on bridges.
