Mumbai’s over 200-year-old Bandra Talao, a Grade II heritage site, is set for a major revival as the BMC prepares to dewater and desludge the polluted lake. With an estimated cost of ₹20 crore, funded by the state’s 15th Finance Commission, the project aims to tackle sewage contamination and floating garbage that have plagued the 7.5-acre waterbody.

The plan includes dewatering a massive 70,000 cubic meters of polluted water and de-sludging the lakebed, essential steps to revive aquatic life in what was once a serene retreat. Officials confirm the funds will be drawn from the 15th Finance Commission grant, with tenders expected to be floated this month by H-West Ward.

Knocksense has long highlighted the sorry state of Bandra Talao, from floating garbage and foul-smelling stagnant water to its neglected walkways, despite a beautification drive in 2018–19. This time, though, the BMC seems intent on real change, with a consultant already appointed to assess water quality and chart a clear path for rejuvenation.

Once a cultural and ecological lifeline for Bandra residents, the Talao has a legacy worth preserving. Originally known as the Lotus Tank, it was built by a Konkani philanthropist and has stood witness to Bandra’s evolution for two centuries.

With fresh efforts, stronger safeguards, and local support, Bandra Talao may soon reclaim its lost charm and stand tall as the neighbourhood’s pride once more.
