Greener & cleaner celebrations! BMC to list artificial ponds on Google Maps for Ganesh Utsav 2024

BMC is taking significant steps towards an eco-friendly celebration.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced plans to list over 200 artificial ponds on Google Maps for the upcoming Ganesh Utsav 2024. This initiative, discussed in a meeting chaired by Mumbai Suburban District Guardian Minister, aims to promote eco-friendly celebrations and reduce pollution in natural water bodies.

By making artificial ponds easily locatable, the BMC hopes to encourage more residents and Ganesh mandals to use these environmental friendly options for idol immersion. The festival, beginning on September 7, traditionally sees thousands of idols immersed in rivers, lakes, and seas, often leading to pollution from plaster of Paris and chemical colours.

Last year, over 205,000 idols were immersed across Mumbai. This new Google Maps feature is expected to significantly increase the use of artificial ponds, contributing to a greener celebration.
