Mumbai Metro has set a national record as India’s leading metro system for WhatsApp-based ticketing, with 19% of all tickets now booked through the platform. Launched in October 2024, the service enables commuters to instantly generate QR-code tickets via a simple WhatsApp message, helping cut down queues and reduce paper consumption.

In a remarkable milestone, Metro Lines 2A and 7 recorded 51,991 WhatsApp ticket bookings in a single day—the highest one-day usage of the feature by any metro system in India.

WhatsApp ticketing powers metro's “Mumbai in Minutes” vision

MMRDA Commissioner, Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee emphasised that WhatsApp ticketing plays a crucial role in advancing their vision of “Mumbai in Minutes,” aiming to make urban travel more seamless, smart, and sustainable.

Today, 65% of metro commuters have gone digital, 44% use the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), 19% opt for WhatsApp ticketing, and 2% rely on the metro app. While 35% still use paper tickets, digital adoption is accelerating, particularly on Metro Lines 2A and 7, which recently saw a record-breaking 2.92 lakh riders in a single day.

Stations like Andheri West and Gundavali are leading the digital shift, with over 51,000 WhatsApp tickets booked in just one day. This milestone not only highlights the growing preference for contactless commuting but also positions Mumbai as a national frontrunner in transit innovation, offering a scalable model for cities across India to follow.
