Maharashtra government has approved the widening of Mumbai’s Marine Drive from six lanes to twelve, for the anticipated traffic surge once the Orange Gate–Marine Drive tunnel becomes operational in 2028. The green light was given at a high‑level meeting at Mumbai's Sahyadri Guest House.

As per reports, the expansion is projected to cost ₹500 crore. Moreover, the project will safeguard the visual identity of Marine Drive, while providing a 25‑year solution to traffic congestion.

Rejected alternatives over environment and security

Before settling on Marine Drive’s widening, MMRDA explored several other alignments, including roads beneath Oval Maidan and through Navy‑owned dockyard land. However, these ideas were abandoned due to environmental concerns, objections from residents, and Navy’s refusal to permit construction near sensitive installations.

Meanwhile, Marine Drive residents have expressed apprehensions regarding the project's impact on the iconic promenade and have urged the government to involve them in the planning process.
