Mumbai is set to tackle its notorious traffic by launching a fleet of 11 flying electric ferries, marking a shift towards water-based public transport. The high-speed hydrofoiling shuttle, Candela P-12s, will be operated by Mumbai-based firm JalVimana. Notably, the order is the largest electric passenger ferry purchase globally. As per online sources, the starting price of one vessel is 16.5 crores.

The first phase will introduce way between the Gateway of India and Alibaug, slashing commute time from three hours by road to under 30 minutes. The same is for Elephanta Island. Plans are also underway for a route connecting the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport to central parts of the city.

Built by Swedish company Candela, the P-12 ferries use hydrofoils (underwater wings that lift the hull above water) to reduce drag, energy use, and emissions. The project supports Maharashtra’s larger goal to overhaul urban transport using eco-friendly marine options.
