A trip from Mumbai to Hyderabad that once took 14-16 hours could soon be slashed to three, owing to the upcoming Mumbai–Hyderabad High-Speed Rail (MHHSR) project. The 767-km bullet train corridor will connect Mumbai, Pune, and Hyderabad with 11 strategically placed stations, including a potential one at the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Speed, tech, fares & what to expect

Key highlights-

  • Blazing Speed: Trains will run at 320 km/h (peaking at 350 km/h) with 11 strategically placed stations, including Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex, Pune, and Hyderabad.

  • Cutting-Edge Tech: Features include earthquake detection systems (UrEDAS), digital signalling, and a mix of elevated, underground, and at-grade tracks for seamless travel.

  • Affordable Luxury: Tickets are expected to cost 1.5 times a first-class AC train fare, offering a premium yet accessible experience.

While construction hasn’t begun, surveys, feasibility studies, and alignment planning are underway. The project is part of India’s plan to build six high-speed rail corridors, with the Mumbai-Ahmedabad line already in progress. Once operational, the MHHSR could boost tourism, reduce congestion, and set a new standard for rail travel in India.
