After 79 years as a cornerstone of Bollywood, Mumbai's iconic Famous Studios in Mahalaxmi will soon be razed to make way for a 69-storey luxury residential tower. Founded in 1943 by J.B. Roongta, the studio provided state-of-the-art facilities for shooting, sound recording, and post-production, hosting countless iconic films and ad shoots.
The Roongta family has partnered with K Raheja Corp Real Estate to redevelop the 70,000 sq ft plot into plush 3 and 4-BHK apartments overlooking the Mahalaxmi Race Course and Arabian Sea. According to plans submitted to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, apartments will begin from the 9th floor, with only a small portion reserved for commercial use.
The project, expected to fall within 500 metres of the upcoming Science Museum Metro Station, may even feature a direct vestibule link for seamless connectivity. For K Raheja Corp, this marks its third marquee project in Mahalaxmi after Vivarea and Modern Vivarea.
Demolition is likely to begin before Christmas, closing the curtain on 79 years of cinematic legacy as another iconic studio gives way to Mumbai’s luxury skyline.
