The couple, aged 93 and 88, had tested positive for the virus in Kerala. They were diabetic, suffered from hypertension and had other old-age related diseases on their medical records. The Health Minister stated, “The elderly couple were literally brought back to life from death”.
Thomas had earlier developed a severe cough, complained of chest pain and urinary infection. He was also diagnosed as vulnerable to severe heart issues and was put on a ventilator as well. His wife, Mariyamma, had also contracted a major urinary and bacterial infection which had further aggravated her condition. Health Minister KK Shailaja, had instructed the authorities to do everything required to ensure their full recovery and the couple were admitted to Kottayam Medical College.
According to officials, the couple had grown restless because they were admitted in two different VIP ICU rooms. On request, they were later shifted to an ICU room from where they could see each other.
But in an unfortunate development, one of the nurses who was tending to the couple has tested positive for this contagious virus and has now been hospitalised. She has been assured of top-notch treatment by the concerned bodies. Kerala has by far reported 240 cases, the second highest in the country.
