One among these is the Red Church, a 19th-century edifice located near the Holkar Palace, often catalogued among the oldest churches of this city. Guiding religious desires for almost 2 centuries
Located within walking distance from the White Church, are the resplendent walls of the Red Church, which stands as a testimony to Indore’s importance in colonial history. Built in the 19th-century to provide religious respite for British soldiers, traders and missionaries, this church’s altar showcases paintings, detailing the life of Christ. Later, the devotees started settling down around the Red Church and that’s how the Red Church Colony was established.
Promoting the principles of charity expounded by the community, the congregation of this church helped in building the St. Raphael’s School for girls nearby in the 1930s. Further, though the Red Church of yore is now preserved only as a historical shrine, another building- St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral, has been erected in the church complex to hold prayers and celebrations. These two have become synonymous with one another and a visit to either of these places ensures you a placid experience.
