The first planned city of India, Jaipur celebrates 293 years of Foundation Day

18th of November marks Jaipur’s Foundation Day, which is celebrated with much zeal and enthusiasm by the residents of the city. The culturally rich Pink City was founded by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singhi II in the year 1727 and at present, this much-loved tourist destination is on it ways to become a smart city. Jaipur’s flamboyance coupled with modernity and an old-world charm, pulls in tourists from all across the globe and today, the city is celebrating 293 years of its Foundation Day.

The Journey of White to Pink

Established in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, Jaipur was modernized in 1942 by Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II and the then Prime Minister, Sir Mirza Ismail. Houses in Jaipur were painted pink in the year 1875 by Sawai Ram Singh over their existing white shade because soon, the Prince of Wales (Edward VII) had scheduled a visit to the city and Ram Singh wanted to show a gesture of hospitality towards the prince. So as per the story, that’s how the city earned its tag as the Pink City of India.

World Heritage City

On February 5, 2020, Jaipur was declared as a World Heritage City by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The city has a running underground metro rail facility from Chandpole to Baddi Chauapar and is counted among the most popular tourist destinations in the country. Poets, writers, novelists and art lovers always celebrate the city with cultural events and it is truly is one-stop destination for all art and book lovers. On November 10, 2020, the city also elected two mayors for the first time ever- Munesh Gujjar of Heritage Municipal Corporation and Somya Gujjar of Jaipur Greater.

The city has everything- from impressive architecture in almost every nook and cranny of the streets to delicious varieties of food, being dished out by the locals. When here, the Hawa Mahal, Galta Gate, Amber Fort, City Palace, Jal Mahal, Nahargarh Fort, Suvarna Bhavan, Patrika Gate, amidst others, need to be visited. Jaipur is a paradise for foodies and has breathtaking architecture with mesmerizing history, which keeps the travellers hooked for hours. Today, it proudly retains its pink hues and the city’s historic developments during the yesteryears, still at present weaves a fascinating visual story.
