To heed to the long-term traffic demands of the city, the construction of Kanpur Metro with a 6-car train configuration which is similar to that of Lucknow and other cities has been in progress. Now as per reports, this year the metro trains of the city will be seen running on the IIT Kanpur to Moti Jheel priority corridor, which is also an elevated route. The authorities will take a step forward on this, on the 30th of November.
First trial run to be held on July 31, probably
The laying of the track on this stretch will start in January and along with this, the signalling work will also commence. The metro sets will start coming into the city in June, all the way from Gujarat. Although the metro authorities have stated that the first trial run will be held on July 31, there are high chances of it being postponed due to the ongoing pandemic. The construction of station rooms at the IIT station has also simultaneously kicked off and even the setting up of track beams here has been completed. Moreover, out of 434 double T-Girds, 292 have been placed at stations and 218 U-Girds out of 622 have been put down already.
It is also being hoped that one of the busiest roads in Kanpur, the GT Road, which is hailed as the lifeline of the city, will be on the receiving end of a major relief after the metro starts running on its tracks. This locale witnesses high congestion with vehicles stuck here for substantial durations.
As per the authorities, by the year 2024, Kanpur will be home to an overall count of 39 metro trains. These trains will run between 30 stations located on two routes in the city and reportedly, the frequency of these metro trains would be around five minutes apart. So if a commuter misses boarding a metro at a particular station, she/he would not have to wait for more than five minutes at the same station.
