Kanpur Metro Update | Nana TBM completes tunnelling between Chunniganj and Naveen Market

The TBM was launched this March for constructing a 1,264-meter-long 'downline' tunnel, connecting Chunniganj to Bada Chauraha via Naveen Market.

The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has made remarkable progress in the timely completion of tunnelling work for the underground corridor of the Kanpur Metro project.

On Wednesday, the Nana TBM successfully concluded the tunnelling work, covering a distance of 750 meters along the Chunniganj-Naveen Market stretch.

50% tunnelling work completed on the Chunniganj-Nayanganj route

Reportedly, the TBM was launched this March for the purpose of constructing a 1,264-meter-long 'downline' tunnel, connecting Chunniganj to Bada Chauraha via Naveen Market. Now, within a span of just 3 months, Nana TBM has accomplished 50% of the progress. Additionally, a total of 523 rings have been installed in the up-line tunnel of the route.

The street route between Chunniganj and Nayaganj is one of the busiest ones in the city. With the help of 'Nana' and 'Tatya' TBMs, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has been able to construct underground tunnels passing through the heart of the city with complete safety and without affecting the road networks of Kanpur.

Highlights on the underground route of Kanpur Metro project

  • The proposed route for the expansion of Orange line corridor will consist of a 4-km long stretch and will also consist of 4 underground stations i.e. Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha and Nayanganj.

  • The tunnel boring machines 'Nana' and 'Tatya' were deployed back in July 2022 and have now completed the work of tunnel construction on the downline and upline between Bada Chauraha to Nayaganj.

  • Nana TBM started the construction of a 1,264-metre-long 'downline' tunnel from Chunniganj to Bada Chauraha via Naveen Market on March 12 this year.

  • Tunnelling work on the 750-metre stretch between Chunniganj to Naveen Market has now been completed (on June 14).

  • Now the 'Nana' TBM will dragged through the Naveen Market Underground Metro Station, spanning from one end to the other, and subsequently recommence its launch trajectory towards the Bada Chauraha Metro Station.

As per the detailed project report (DPR) released by UPMRC, the overall metro project of the city is estimated to be finalized by the end of the year 2024.
