Smart City Kanpur has launched a new initiative to manage the garbage disposal system in a bid to rank higher in the National Swachh Survekshan 2022. For this, the Kanpur Nagar Nigam has installed a model underground dumpster at Bada Chauraha, with an aim to keep roads and surroundings garbage-free.
As per reports, over 100 more such structures will be constructed in Kanpur under this programme; preparations are underway at 6 locations as yet.

In a bid to rank higher in the National Cleanliness Survey of India, Kanpur Nagar Nigam and Smart City Kanpur have introduced and installed the novelty of an underground dumpster at Bada Chauraha. This structure can hold up to 12 to 15 metric tonnes of waste at one time and can be used to directly transport waster from site to waste disposal grounds at Bhausingh Panki.
The new underground bin is fairly easy to use. People can wrap waste in balloon pouches and then drop it in the head of the dump yard to dispose of the packets. The concerned team of the municipality will then come and collect the waste at regular intervals and clear the bins for further use. Another advantage of using this system is of course the fact that animals and strays will not be able to reach the garbage to consume toxic materials or scatter it around, keeping Kanpur roads cleaner.
The programme will be soon scaled to include 100 underground dumpsters in Kanpur. As of now, preparations are underway at Swaroop Nagar, Jajmau, Panchakki Churaha, Baakarganj, Govind Nagar and Kalyanpur informed Dr Ajay Sankhwar, District Health Official.
Door-to-door garbage collection drive

Meanwhile, the Kanpur Nagar Nigam has also launched a door-to-door garbage collection drive in the city. There are around 110 wards in the city and the door-step service is active in about 80 of them, added reports. Here too, cleaning marshals ensure that the public segregates the waste, into wet and dry categories, before disposing it.
All programmes have been launched to improve Kanpur’s ranking in the upcoming 2022 edition of the Swach Survekhan, conducted across India. Reportedly, Kanpur had secured the 21st position in the nationwide index and the 3rd rank in Uttar Pradesh in the survey of 2021.
