Medical experts at a recent urology conference held at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, have drawn attention to a concerning correlation between the consumption of pan masala and the development of large kidney stones, particularly those exceeding 2 cm in size.
Kidney stones, typically formed due to a buildup of substances like calcium, oxalate, and uric acid in the urine, pose significant health risks, including excruciating pain, urinary tract infections, kidney damage, or obstruction of the urinary tract. Complications often arise if kidney stones become large or numerous, exacerbating the severity of symptoms.
Experts from the urology field highlighted that approximately 70% of patients presenting with sizable kidney stones in the outpatient department have reported a history of pan masala usage, indicating a potential link between the two.
In response to this concerning trend, advancements in minimally invasive procedures offer promising outcomes for affected individuals, underscoring the importance of timely intervention and preventive measures.
