Lucknow Metro’s North-South route is all set to open for public. Construction, inspections and trials of the new metro route have been completed and the metro will be inaugurated tomorrow, March 08 following which, there will be an inaugural run. In this, the trains will cover the entire length of the route twice after which, on 9th, the metro will be made open for the public.

The Lucknow Metro has been plying between Charbagh and Transport Nagar, but from 9th March, the metro will cover the entire North-South route from Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport all the way to Munshipuliya. Officials have stated that the metro will cover the entire 23-kilometer route over a period of just 42 minutes.

Existing Routes, fares and timings of Lucknow Metro

Owing to the quick development of the intra city rail system, the metro has connected the northern part of the city with the southern part. The current metro line has recently been completed and goes from Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport to Munshipuliya, two areas of the city that are poles apart.

Prior to this, the metro plied only between Transport Nagar and Charbagh. The final, completed route covers a total length of almost 22-kilometers.

Along its 22-kilometer route, the metro connects prominent areas of the city such as Alambagh, Charbagh, Hazratganj, Lucknow University, Mahanagar, Indra Nagar and a few more. The route has four underground metro stations and nine over head stations, making a total of 13 metro stations across the city.

Currently, the Lucknow Metro service starts from 6:00 AM and is active till 10:00 PM. Like other metros, the Lucknow metro provides a cheaper and more convenient mode of transport.

Smart cards can be obtained for ₹200 at all stations. As for ticket prices, traveling up to one station will cost ₹10, seven to nine stations will cost ₹30 and so on. If you travel the entire 22-kilometer length of the metro route, it should cost you less than a hundred bucks as opposed to travelling in a cab, where the fares would be upwards of ₹250.

Benefits to Lucknowites

At its core, the goal of the Lucknow Metro is to make commutes for residents and tourists in the city a breeze. Since its inception back in September 2017, Lucknow Metro has achieved some serious expansion and continues to grow, all while being a boon to residents of the city.

The Lucknow metro also makes it possible to pay a visit to the small market lanes across the city. People generally avoid going to these markets because of the traffic. Some of the markets that are now more accessible with the help of the metro are Alambagh market, Janpath market, Aminabad and Hazratganj.

At stations near student hubs such as IT College and Lucknow University, you can find some really cheap eats and vibes that will remind you of your days in college. Apart from that, you can pay a visit to Gol Market and Kapoorthala, which are vibrant shopping hubs near Mahanagar metro station. Office goers are also at a benefit as you no longer have to worry about traffic jams because the metro bypasses all roads and you can get to your destination much faster.

One of the best things that the metro does is that it now connects commuters to Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport. This comes as great news for frequent flyers as they no longer have to opt for expensive cabs and be stuck in traffic jams. Since the metro provides last line connectivity, they can hop on the metro directly from the Airport.

What does the future hold for Lucknow Metro?

Like the past, the future of lucknow metro is bright. In the upcoming years, a new line of the metro- East-West route will be completed and it will cover 11 stations across Lucknow.

The upcoming route will start from Charbagh Railway station, which will be common for both the routes and will go up to Vasant Kunj. Along the way, it will cover a distance of 11.9 kilometers connecting areas such as Aminabad, Medical College Chauraha, Safarganj and Musabagh.

Apart from this, Metro Phase 2 & 3 will consist of 6 lines covering a distance of 74 km. The three lines in Phase 2 will be from IIM Lucknow to Rajajipuram, Indira Nagar to CG City and CG City to CCS International Airport. Phase 3, will cover areas from Munshipulia to Jankipuram, Charbagh to SGPGI and Sachivalaya to CG City.
