In a bid to bolster women safety, the Uttar Pradesh State Roadways has decided to equip its buses with GPS tracking systems and panic buttons. As per reports, about 11,750 buses, including both ordinary and AC buses will receive this upgrade at the cost of ₹15 crores, commissioned from the Nirbhaya Fund. The new instalments will help to extend rapid emergency services in case of accidents or other calamities.
UPSRTC makes provisions to uphold women safety
Uttar Pradesh State Roadways Transport Corporation buses will soon be upgraded to uphold women safety during commute by means of GPS trackers and the much-needed panic buttons. Officials have informed that this button will connect the bus to UP 112, the state police emergency helpline, which will relay the information to UPSRTC. The officers and interceptors of the roadways will be able to expedite rapid help by means of this mechanism.
For further aid, the GPS trackers will monitor the exact location of the service, boosting immediate assistance at the site. Officials also informed that the tracking system will be utilised by the control rooms to surveil the buses throughout the course of the journey, round the clock.
The Board of Directors at the Corporation are in favour of the project and have given their affirmation to the installation proposal. The tenders of the same have been issued on May 28 and bids can be submitted until the deadline on June 11. The agency winning the tender will be permitted to set up its own command centre, connect to UP 112 and also operate the provision. Earlier, these provisions were made available in Pink Seva Buses, deployed specially for women.
