Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has rolled out many initiatives in the past years to improve Mumbai’s environmental health. Now, the focus is shifting towards encouraging eco-friendly practices among residents, with the launch of the ‘Green Building’ initiative being a prime example.
As per reports, a new building is set to rise in BMC’s Santacruz office area. Designed with sustainability in mind, this structure will adopt ‘zero waste’ principle and operate on solar energy. Meanwhile, here some other initiatives implemented by BMC to make MumbaI greener.

In 2024, BMC launched the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative, said reports.

By 2025-26, BMC aims to convert five crematoriums to PNG fuel-based facilities.

Sculptors will be provided with Shadu soil for eco-friendly Ganesh idols. Moreover, the use of plastic for idols has been banned by the court.

The Swachh Bharat 2.0 initiative seeks to achieve 100% sewage collection in Mumbai. The state government has approved the Mumbai City Sanitation Action Plan, which includes the construction of 15,000 community toilets, 400 mobile toilets, 4,672 household toilets, and 500 individual toilets to support transitions between business, industry, and job-related activities.
