The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced groundbreaking initiatives in its 2025-26 budget, prioritising pedestrian-friendly infrastructure alongside major development projects. At the forefront is the new ‘Universal Footpath Policy,’ backed by a substantial allocation of ₹5,100 crore for the roads and traffic department.
Walkability, green spaces & mega projects
The policy aims to transform Mumbai’s walkways, making them more accessible to people with disabilities and enhancing overall pedestrian safety. This initiative aligns with the city’s vision to reduce vehicle dependency and promote healthier lifestyle choices for its residents.
Adding to the city’s recreational landscape, BMC has revived plans for a ‘Mumbai Eye’, inspired by the iconic London Eye, to boost tourism. The civic body is also working on a ‘Tiger Monument’ inside the twin tunnels of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road, which passes beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
Further, Mumbai’s green spaces are set to expand with the Anandvan Green Belt, a natural stone pathway with tree plantations and bio-toilets. Additionally, the Mumbai Public Park, covering over 290 acres, will be developed at Mahalaxmi Race Course and Coastal Road land.
With plans to upgrade Koliwadas, expand Byculla Zoo, and create more pedestrian-friendly areas, BMC’s budget is a promising step toward a more walkable and sustainable Mumbai.
