On February 19, Maharashtra proudly commemorates the 395th birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, celebrating the legacy of the legendary Maratha warrior king. Born in 1630 at Shivneri Fort near Pune, Shivaji Maharaj was not just a fearless warrior but also a visionary leader who laid the foundation of the Maratha Empire.
His life exemplifies courage, strategic brilliance, and an unwavering commitment to justice and self-rule—values that continue to inspire generations across India.
A king, a leader, a visionary
The celebration of Shivaji Jayanti carries a legacy of its own. It was first introduced in 1870 by social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule after he rediscovered Shivaji Maharaj’s tomb at Raigad Fort. Later, freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak played a key role in popularising the event, turning it into a grand celebration of Maratha pride.
Shivaji Maharaj first gained prominence after defeating General Afzal Khan’s army of 20,000, drawing the attention of Aurangzeb, who then governed the Deccan Sultanates under the Mughal Empire. His long-standing conflicts with the Mughals culminated in his formal coronation as Chhatrapati at Raigad Fort in 1674. A visionary ruler, he introduced progressive reforms such as the Chauth and Sardeshmukhi taxation systems and replaced the exploitative Jagirdari system with the more farmer-friendly Ryotwari system. Remarkably, his journey as a warrior-king began at just 16.
Today, Maharashtra celebrates Shivaji Jayanti with grand processions, cultural performances, and educational seminars, ensuring that his extraordinary legacy continues to inspire generations.
