Inspector Dwarka Vishwanath Dokhe has etched her name in history by becoming the first woman in the Maharashtra Police Force to conquer Mount Everest. Hailing from Srirampur in Ahmednagar district, 49-year-old Dokhe embarked on her journey after being inspired by the book “Saad Deti Him Shikhare,” which ignited her passion for scaling mountains.

Currently serving as a Cybercrime Instructor at the Nashik Police Academy, Dokhe’s passion for mountaineering has been unwavering since 2016, with numerous successful climbs of snow-covered peaks.

Dwarka’s rigorous training regimen included running 15 kilometers three days a week, walking on a treadmill with a steep incline, and carrying over 210 kilograms on her back daily, which prepared her for the arduous expedition. Additionally, she dedicated herself to full-body workouts and climbing the staircase of an eight-story building regularly.

Under the guidance of Lakpa Sherpa, owner of an Everest climbing company, and accompanied by Pasang Sherpa, Dokhe commenced her ascent from Everest Base Camp on May 17, 2024. After five days of relentless climbing, she reached the summit at 4:10 AM on May 22, proudly hoisting the National flag of India and the flag of the Maharashtra Police Force while singing the National Anthem. She also paid homage to her parents, carrying their photo as a tribute.

Despite facing interruptions due to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the COVID-19 pandemic, Dokhe’s determination remained unwavering. Her feat exemplifies that age is no barrier to achieving one’s dreams, inspiring countless others to pursue their aspirations relentlessly.

Breaking barriers and setting records

Today, as we celebrate World Menstrual Hygiene Day, it’s crucial to ensure that all women have the opportunity to reach their full potential, break barriers, and set records like Dwarka Dokhe. Her historic climb of Mount Everest serves as a powerful reminder of women’s strength and resilience.

Her remarkable achievement in conquering Everest is inspiring women everywhere and is underscoring the importance of supporting women’s empowerment and breaking gender stereotypes. Let’s use this occasion to advocate for menstrual hygiene as well and empower women to reach new heights in every aspect of their lives.
