Elon Musk’s Starlink has officially planted its flag in India’s financial capital, securing its first office in Mumbai’s Chandivali area. This strategic move signals the company’s aggressive push to launch its satellite broadband services in the country, following its recent regulatory approvals.
The company has rented 1,294 sq ft in the Boomerang commercial building on a five-year lease starting October 14, with a monthly rent of ₹3.52 lakh and annual 5% escalation.
Nine gateway stations to bring satellite internet nationwide
This modest office aligns with Starlink’s broader India strategy, which includes establishing nine gateway earth stations across major cities, including Mumbai, Noida, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Lucknow. These facilities will enable high-speed satellite broadband delivery nationwide, particularly benefiting remote and rural areas beyond traditional network reach.
The Department of Telecommunications has allocated spectrum for Starlink’s security compliance tests, the final hurdle before commercial rollout. Starlink has already partnered with UIDAI for Aadhaar-based customer verification, streamlining the onboarding process.
For Mumbai specifically, industry experts view the city as a potential central hub for Starlink’s Indian operations. With approximately 60% of India’s data centres concentrated in the Mumbai-Navi Mumbai region, the satellite internet launch could further accelerate commercial development in areas like Bandra, Juhu, and emerging tech corridors near Navi Mumbai International Airport.
