Upping their traffic management game day by day, the Mumbai Police is prepping to conduct a two-hour no honking drive on prominent roads on Saturday, that is today. Notably, this one-of-a-kind drive will be conducted from 5 PM to 7 PM. As the name suggests, motorists will be urged to not blow horns during the said period, to observe road safety and silence.
Marking #NoHonkingDay with silence
Reportedly, the initiative is a part of an awareness programme that is aiming to curb noise pollution in the city. Reiterating the same, Mumbai Police on Saturday tweeted “Your Street Or Mine. Honking Anywhere Won’t Be Quite Fine. On the occasion of #NoHonkingDay on May 28, 2022 from 5-7 pm. Expect awareness drive & enforcement on streets at the following traffic junctions across Mumbai,” from their official twitter handle with the trending hashtag of #SayNoToNoisePollution.
While advising motorists to cut down on the honking, the police said that action will be taken against drivers who fail to comply to the said instructions.
Limiting the volume of vehicular horns
In another attempt to reduce noise pollution, the Mumbai Police requested automobile manufacturers to limit the volume of horns. Presently, the volume of vehicular horns range from 92 to 112 decibels. The plan of action aims to lower it down to 88 to 100 decibles, in accordance to the Superme Court’s directions on noise pollution, officials said.
Besides, several builders and developers have been asked to curb the noise caused by construction work to enable citizens pollution free Sundays.
