In a move to create jobs and counter the dominance of private aggregators like Ola, Uber and Rapido, the Maharashtra government is set to roll out its own ride-hailing platform. Tentatively named Jai Maharashtra, Maha-Ride, Maha-Yatri or Maha-Go, the app will offer auto-rickshaw, taxi and e-bike services with transparent pricing and fairer earnings for drivers, ensuring passenger safety and protection. A key meeting on August 5 will finalise the app’s launch.
The initiative aims to provide an equitable alternative to existing ride-hailing services while generating employment opportunities across the state.
Final approval pending for fairer, transparent service
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that the app is in its final stages of development, with input from the Maharashtra Institute for Transport Technology and private tech companies. The state-backed platform promises greater fairness, ensuring both passengers and drivers benefit from lower commissions and no surge pricing, issues often criticised in private apps.
To support this initiative, Mumbai Bank will offer vehicle loans at a 10% interest rate to youth, with an 11% subsidy from state-run bodies, effectively making the loans interest-free.
A key meeting on August 5 will finalise the app’s launch, pending CM’s approval. The move aims to curb exploitation by private apps, ensuring affordable fares and reliable service. If successful, it could redefine public transport in Maharashtra.
