Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Aiport (CSMIA) will introduce a prepaid auto-rickshaw service at Terminal 2 (T2) by the end of June, offering passengers a hassle-free and transparent commuting option. The move aims to curb overcharging and refusal of rides by unruly drivers, a persistent issue at the airport.
No more haggling!
With all necessary approvals in place, including from the state government and MMRTA, authorities are now setting up dedicated counters, seating areas for differently-abled passengers, and bays for luggage trolleys. The service will use fare charts approved by the RTO, integrated into new prepaid software to ensure transparent billing.
According to officials, this initiative is expected to curb fare manipulation and control rouge drivers, improving last-mile connectivity. An NGO, Happy To Help, has also offered support in operations, while Mumbai Traffic Police will assist in enforcement.
Currently available for taxis, the pre-paid system’s extension to auto-rickshaw marks a key step toward improving public transport access at Mumbai airport, with future expansion to Terminal 1 already in discussion.
