Mumbai’s weather continues to fluctuate this December, with temperatures ranging from unseasonal highs to notable lows. After recording its coldest December day in nine years on Monday, at 13.7°C, the city reported a maximum temperature of 35.6°C on Wednesday — making it the hottest city in Maharashtra.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 2.5°C above normal and a minimum of 20°C, which is 1.2°C above average. At the Colaba Observatory, the maximum temperature recorded was 33.7°C, 1°C above normal, and the minimum was 22.6°C, 0.9°C higher than usual.
Experts say that the dip in temperatures earlier this week was due to northerly winds, but a low-pressure system has now brought in easterly winds, causing temperatures to rise again. The IMD predicts that the city’s minimum temperatures may stay slightly higher, with another dip expected after the 14th of December. However, the next cool spell may not be as sharp as Monday’s.
Earlier this month, Mumbai registered its hottest December day in 16 years as temperatures soared to 37.3°C—nearly 4°C above the seasonal average. The sharp rise came on the heels of the city’s coldest November day in eight years, when temperatures had plunged to a chilly 16°C.
