Mumbai Metro Line 4: Costs surge by ₹1,274.80 crores, completion delayed by 5 years

The cost of constructing Mumbai Metro Line 4, which will connect Wadala to Kasarvadavali, has surged by 50%, reaching ₹1,274.80 crore. Originally budgeted at ₹2,632.25 crore, the project is now under severe budgetary strain and faces a five-year setback. This revelation came through a response to an RTI application filed by activist Anil Galgali.

According to the details shared by Galgali, the construction contract for the 32.32-km elevated corridor was awarded to RInfra-ASTALDI and CHEC-TPL in April, 2018. The corridor, which will feature 30 stations, was originally slated for completion by July 2021. However, the rising costs have pushed the completion date to August 2026.

Metro Line-4 is designed to improve urban mobility by connecting key points like the Eastern Express Highway, Central Railway, Monorail, Line 2B (DN Nagar to Mandale), Line 5 (Thane to Kalyan), and Line 6 (Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli).

But with the project now exceeding its budget by almost 50%, questions around mismanagement and inefficiency are beginning to intensify. As Mumbaikars continue to wait, the calls for greater transparency and accountability grow louder.
