The month of June might have been very dry in terms of rains, however, the monsoon has finally hit Maharashtra. Like every other year, heavy rains have created chaos in Mumbai and nearby areas, with intense downpour. On Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert in Mumbai and an orange alert for adjoining areas like Thane and Palghar.

IMD issues yellow & orange alerts for Mumbai and satellite regions
The MeT department has issued a warning for a heavy downpour in the state, including a yellow alert for Mumbai, an orange alert for the nearby areas like Palghar and Thane, and a red alert for Ratnagiri and Raigad, for the next five days. As per reports, a possible rise in the sea level and high tide of around 3.94 meters is expected around 4.30 pm on Wednesday. Hence, an IMD advisory urged people to stay indoors to avoid getting stuck in heavy rains.
Waterlogging and blocked roads cause delay
Severe rain all day closed four arterial subways in the North-West part of Mumbai in causing a traffic shutdown at Golibar, Milan, Andheri and Malad, on Tuesday. This heavy waterlogging led to several diversions on the day.
A traffic official reportedly said, motorists were diverted to an alternative route, causing slow traffic at several location. In some low-lying areas, vehicular movement also came to a standstill due to intense flooding.
Moreover, the heavy Mumbai rains have also caused waterlogging on railway tracks, pushing a 10 to 15-minute delay on the Central Railway routes.
Landslides near Ghatkopar, Thane-Mumbai bypass road
After heavy rains, blocked roads, and possible high tides, two incidents of landslides were reported in Mumbai on Tuesday. There was a landslide in the Ghatkopar area of Panchsheel Nagar, where houses collapsed and another one near Thane’s Mumbra bypass road.
Although there was no harm to life in both the landslides, NDRF issued an alert in Mumbai and adjoining areas, deploying 11 teams of the National Disaster Management Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Management Force (SDRF) to various parts of Maharashtra.
The rains shall prevail in Mumbai all July
Monsoon in Mumbai proved “better late than never” true, making up for the dry month of June. Mumbai has already received around 555mm of rainfall on Tuesday, 64% of what it usually gets in the month of July.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), 115.3mm of rain was recorded at Santacruz on Tuesday, from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. The downpour shall continue all July in Mumbai, probably making it the wettest month of this year.
