Lucknow will talk your ear off about kebabs, biryani, and everything mutton, but ask about fish and it gets suspiciously quiet, right before it surprises you. This is a landlocked city with zero business having a serious fish scene, and yet it’s quietly built one, Friday-only kebabs guarded like state secrets, Mughlai tikka sharing a menu with Indo-Chinese chaos, a one-item stall with a cult following, superfood bowls for the guilty, burritos for the confused. Nobody agreed on a single style, which is exactly why it works. Eleven spots, eleven completely different ideas of what fish should taste like, the city just never bothered to announce it was this good at something so far from the sea.
Sakhawat’s
Lucknow will happily feed you kebabs any day of the week, except this one. Sakhawat’s saves its fish kebab strictly for Fridays, which means the rest of your week is basically a waiting room. The seekh is soft enough to argue with a fork, held together by spices that know exactly when to show up and when to stay quiet. Regulars don’t ask if it’s available, they just check the calendar first. It’s less a menu item and more an appointment, and the city seems entirely fine with that arrangement. Some things earn the wait.
When- 2 PM- 11 PM
Where- Near Oudh Gymkhana Club, Kaiserbagh Officer’s Colony, Kaiser Bagh
Only available on Fridays
Chatpati Fish House
“Chatpati” isn’t a suggestion here, it’s a personality trait. Every fish on this menu, fried, curried, tikka’d, kebab’d, comes with the same tangy, no-subtlety spice hit, whether it’s boneless fry or a whole pomfret. The bone-in fry demands patience and rewards it; the curry skips patience entirely. It’s not a place for people who like their fish quiet. It’s a place for people who’ve made peace with getting a little messy for a good reason.
When- 1:30 PM- 11 PM
Where- Subhash Marg, Opposite Sudarshan Cinema, Charbagh
Gravy Groovy
Gravy Groovy sounds like it should be confused, Amritsari tikka, tawa grill, Mughlai curry, three cities pulling one menu in three directions. It isn’t. The Amritsari fish tikka brings the punch, the tawa fish plays it straight and smoky, and the Mughlai curry slows everything down with cream and patience. Nothing here is trying to be the others. It’s less a fusion menu and more three good ideas that happen to share a kitchen, and somehow all three land on the same plate without fighting.
When- 12:30 PM- 11 PM
Where- Shop A2, Kisan Bazaar, Near Cinepolis Mall, Vibhuti Khand, Gomti Nagar
Veer Ji Macchli Wale
Veer Ji Macchli Wale doesn’t do menus, it does a decision. Fish pakoda, made fresh, sold fast, and defended fiercely by everyone who’s had it, that’s the whole pitch. No sides to distract you, no curry to hedge the bet. Just batter-crisp fish that’s gone from the fryer to your hand before it’s had time to cool, spiced enough to need nothing else. It’s the kind of place that could easily expand the menu and simply hasn’t bothered, because why fix a queue that’s already working.
When- 5 PM onwards
Where- Paper Mill Colony
Sardar Ji Machhli Wale
Sardar Ji Machhli Wale runs on a quiet rivalry it never asked for, boneless fry versus fry with bones, and regulars pick a side the way people pick football teams. The boneless version is the easy sell: clean, crisp, no negotiation required. The bone-in fry is for the ones who think flavour and inconvenience are non-negotiable partners, and honestly, they might be right. Nobody at the counter is trying to convert anyone. You just order your side and eat like you’ve always known which one wins.
When- 2 PM- 9:30 PM
Where- Shop 16, LDA Market, Alambagh
Champaran Meat House
You walk into Champaran Meat House expecting meat, obviously, it’s in the name. What you don’t expect is a fish menu solid enough to make you forget why you came. Fry that’s properly crisp, kebab that’s properly spiced, tikka with a good char, curry with real depth. None of it feels like an afterthought, which is the highest compliment you can pay a place that never promised fish in the first place.
When- 11 AM- 11 PM
Where- 2/ 51, Viraj Khand, Gomti Nagar
Haji’s
Walk into Haji’s undecided about what you want, and the menu makes it worse on purpose. Malai and ajwain fish tikka sit there being classically Mughlai, unbothered, soft, smoky, spiced like someone’s grandmother is still involved. Two feet away, schezwan and hot garlic fish are having an entirely different conversation, all sauce and heat and no interest in tradition. Fish do pyaaza tries to referee. Manchurian doesn’t even show up to the meeting. Eight dishes, one fish, two personalities that never once agree, and somehow you’re supposed to pick just one.
When- 11 AM- 1:30 AM
Where- Haider Market, Sector 23, Amarpali Chauraha, Indira Nagar
Talllk Espresso Bar & Kitchen
Nobody comes to Lucknow expecting a fish burrito, which is precisely why Talllk’s fish beet burrito works, it’s not trying to fit in. The beet does something unexpected to the usual fish-wrap logic, turning it earthy instead of just tangy. Then, almost as an apology to tradition, there’s classic fish & chips sitting right next to it, straightforward and unbothered by the burrito’s identity crisis. One dish is asking a question. The other already knows the answer. Together they make a menu that shouldn’t work in this city and somehow just does.
When- 10:30 AM- 11 PM
Where- DLF MyPad, B1 – 26, Vijaipur Colony, Vibhuti Khand, Gomti Nagar
The Culinary House
Order the grilled fish in lemon saffron butter sauce if you want dinner to feel like an occasion. Order the ajwain fish tikka if you want it to feel like home. Order the Bengali fish curry if you want it to feel like someone else’s home, in the best way, mustard oil, panch phoron, a sharpness the other two don’t attempt. The Culinary House isn’t picking a lane, and the fish is versatile enough not to mind.
When- 11 AM- 11 PM
Where- 1/A-15A, Sector 1, Gomti Nagar
89 Mint Leaf
89 Mint Leaf isn’t reinventing fish, and it doesn’t pretend to. Fish tikka, Amritsari, kali mirch tikka, curry, every name on this list you’ve seen a hundred times elsewhere. The difference shows up in execution, not invention: the Amritsari has the crunch most places forget to chase, the kali mirch tikka doesn’t shy away from actually tasting of pepper, the curry doesn’t cut corners on time. It’s not a menu built to surprise you. It’s built to make you wonder why the familiar version rarely tastes this right.
When- 11 AM- 12 Midnight
Where- Shop 89, Super Market, Vibhuti Khand, Gomti Nagar
Crave Fit
No one orders from Crave expecting to feel virtuous and let down at the same time, which is usually the risk with “healthy” fish menus. The turmeric superfood bowl leans Mexican, the salad stays clean without going bland, and the grilled fish keeps it simple on purpose. Delivery-only, no dine-in guilt-eating required. It’s the rare good-decisions menu that doesn’t taste like one.
When- 10:30 AM- 10:30 PM
Where- M23, Kisan Bazar, Vibhuti Khand, Gomti Nagar
